Happy 2021

Happy 2021 from Ye lab@UGA. We have made it through 2020 with resilience, and we are looking forward to a much better year in 2021, a year to get back together face-to-face.

Ye lab entrance

Due to the pandemic, we have to shut down physical operation in-between March and June, and move most research activities online. Fortunately, more than half of our regular research effort is computational, so it was relatively easy to transition online. All "computational" members have been working from home. This also made more room in the lab for the "experimental" members to ensure social distancing and to reduce the risk of infection. The Ye lab has been going strong despite all these challenges.

Multiple group members have moved on to their next career phase. Riya Gohil, our lab tech, started grad school at UNC Chapel Hill. Kyndal Goss, the first undergrad in the lab, has joined grad school at Emory after a one-year Bioinformatics internship at NIH. Briana Sellers, Haley Chishom, Chang Liu, and Lingshu Liu have graduated from college in May. Chang and Lingshu were visiting undergrad student from Wuhan University. Their visits were cut short because of the pandemic, but they have made significant contributions to several research projects. Visiting scholars, Ake Liu and Yan Long, have both returned to their home institutes. Our first postdoc, Jingqi Zhou, also has move on to be a faculty member at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. We cheer for their achievements and wish them the best luck in their future endeavors.

Ye lab Zoom meetings

Multiple new members joined the group. First, over the 2020 summer, we were able to continue serve our community by offering remote research opportunities to high school and undergrad students. Nuno Carvalho, from Lambert High School, joined us through the UGA Young Dawgs Program. Kris Porter, from Mississippi State University, joined us through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. In the fall, we welcomed two undergrads, Megan Hong and Stephanie Neville, and one high-school students, Will Fang, into the group. Starting 2021 Spring, another five UGA undergrads will join the group: Isabelle Bowman, Claire Cheng, Alex Chiang, Aaron Geanas, Nitya Modulla. Here, I would like to give a special thanks to the graduate students, Michael, Shuang, and Yitang, for their effort in mentoring the undergrad and high-school students.

In the challenging year of 2020, we were able to maintain exciting research progress! We published our first major paper in the Ye lab. This study investigated the health effects of altering the circulating levels of micronutrients. We also turned our research tools/resources on the pandemic. Our study to identifying risk factors for COVID-19 was published in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity. We have also released multiple manuscripts on medRxiv.

There are many more achievements. For example, Shuang and Michael have passed their qualifying exams. They are now PhD candidates! The undergrads received multiple research fellowships and assistantships. I am very proud of their accomplishments and I thank them for their unwavering efforts.

Cheers to all our achievements in a challenging year, and to a much better year ahead.
